Believe it or not, scientists have found that men around the world are particularly attracted to women with a back that curves exactly 45 degrees above the top of her buttocks. The researcher also found the structure of the spine itself, rather than just the backsides’ fat and muscle, is the attraction. So men who think they like big bottoms may actually be more into spines than booties. Before you run into the bathroom with a protractor, let me explain why this is true and offer other fascinating truths about sexuality.
Researchers hypothesize that male’s preference for this anatomy evolved because it enabled women to sustain multiple pregnancies without injury and to be able to forage throughout the pregnancy. What is fascinating to me is that this attraction is all below our level of consciousness; it’s been built into our DNA and our brain wiring. There are some other attributes that are subconsciously behind the birds and the bees of mate attraction that I think you’ll find interesting.
Women are universally attracted to males who are 3 ½ years older and four inches taller. Females are most attracted to men who display facial and body symmetry, as this is an indicator of a strong immune system, better health, and higher frequency of orgasm during intercourse. Just before ovulation, female’s nose and brain circuits become more sensitive to male pheromones, an imperceptible odor. Within six minutes of detecting a man’s pheromones, a woman’s mood brightens and her desire for sex heightens for hours.
Males have a different subliminal agenda. Around the globe, men’s mate detection circuits are primarily visual. Thus, they are attracted to women who are 2 ½ years younger and physically attractive: clear skin, bright eyes, full lips, curvy hourglass figure with large breasts, small waist, full hips, and flat stomach. These are all strong visual markers of fertility and a lack of pregnancy. Girls with a curvier shape and a waist that is one third narrower than her hips have the best reproductive odds: they have higher levels of estrogen and become pregnant easier and at younger ages. Oh, and don’t forget the 45 degree bootie.
There is a lot going on when it comes to attracting a romantic partner, and much of it goes on below the surface of our awareness. I love giving talks to high school and college women on the female and male brain, hormones, sexuality, and mate attraction because they are like sponges. No one has ever given girls this type of information to help them more deeply understand what’s going on in their bodies, their emotions, and their romantic attractions. Provide your daughter with information and a safe, nonjudgmental ear in order to open up conversations about these topics. They need adults to bounce things off of, obtain accurate information, and learn from your experience and wisdom.
